SVQ/NVQ – Wood Occupations (Level 2 NVQ Diploma)
This qualification recognises the knowledge, skills, and competence of individuals working in wood-based construction occupations. It validates workplace expertise and ensures candidates meet industry standards in both practical ability and understanding.
The qualification is competence-based, requiring candidates to demonstrate their skills in a real work environment. Assessment involves evaluating knowledge, understanding, and practical ability against the unit standards. Candidates compile a portfolio of evidence showing that all learning outcomes and assessment criteria have been achieved.
Mandatory Units
All candidates, regardless of pathway, must complete the following units:
Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace
Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace
Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplace
Pathways and Assessment
Candidates select one pathway based on their specialism and complete the mandatory and/or optional units associated with it. Each pathway is tailored to develop relevant skills and occupational competence.

Site Carpentry – General site-based timber work
Architectural Joinery – Precision joinery and detailed timber fittings
Structural Post and Beam Carpentry – Heavy timber construction
Light Structural Timber Framing – Timber frame structures for buildings
Timber Frame Erection – Assembly and installation of pre-fabricated timber frames
Timber Decks and Cladding – Outdoor timber construction, decking, and cladding
Heritage Site Carpentry – Carpentry techniques for historic buildings
Heritage Architectural Joinery – Precision joinery for heritage restoration
Heritage Structural Post and Beam Carpentry – Traditional timber frame restoration
Pre-assembled Roof Structure Installer – Installing pre-fabricated roof structures
Assessment Overview
Candidates are assessed in a real work environment.
Portfolio of evidence is compiled to demonstrate skills, knowledge, and competence.
Mandatory and pathway-specific units must be fully achieved to gain the NVQ Diploma
