SVQ/NVQ Diploma – Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting Occupations (Level 2)

The Level 2 SVQ/NVQ Diploma in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting Occupations is a work-based qualification designed for learners with some prior knowledge or basic skills in painting, decorating, plastering, and tiling within the construction industry.

This qualification allows candidates to gain formal recognition for their skills, demonstrating competence in decorative finishing or industrial painting practices. Progress and assessment are supported by experienced assessors, ensuring learners meet the required standards in a real workplace environment.

Upon successful completion, candidates may be eligible for the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card.


Who Should Attend?

  • Individuals with basic experience in painting, decorating, plastering, or tiling

  • Learners aiming to formalise and demonstrate their skills

  • Construction operatives seeking career progression within decorative finishing or industrial painting


Assessment & Certification

  • Assessment: Observation of work-based tasks, portfolio of evidence, and professional discussion

  • Certification: Level 2 SVQ/NVQ Diploma in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting Occupations

  • CSCS Card: Eligible for Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card upon successful completion


Pathways and Units

Pathway 1 – Painter

Mandatory Units – Complete all 6

  1. Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace

  2. Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace

  3. Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplace

  4. Erecting and dismantling access/working platforms in the workplace

  5. Preparing surfaces for painting and/or decorating in the workplace

  6. Applying surface coatings by brush and roller in the workplace

Additional Units are available for extra learning but do not count towards the qualification.


Pathway 2 – Industrial Painter

Mandatory Units – Complete all 6

  1. Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace

  2. Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace

  3. Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplace

  4. Erecting and dismantling access/working platforms in the workplace

  5. Preparing surfaces for painting and/or decorating in the workplace

  6. Applying surface coatings by brush and roller in the workplace

Optional Units – Complete 1 unit

  • Operating equipment in support of the paint sprayer in the workplace

  • Applying coatings by the airless spray method in the workplace

  • Preparing surfaces by abrasive blast cleaning in the workplace


Pathway 3 – Heritage Painter

Mandatory Units – Complete all 7

  1. Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace

  2. Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace

  3. Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplace

  4. Erecting and dismantling access/working platforms in the workplace

  5. Preparing surfaces for heritage painting and decoration

  6. Applying surface coatings using traditional or specialist methods

  7. Applying decorative finishes appropriate to heritage environments

Additional Units – Optional

Candidates may choose to complete any of the following for additional skills (not contributing to overall qualification):

  • Hang wallcoverings (standard and foundation papers)

  • Hang non-standard width wallcoverings

  • Applying coatings by the air spray method

  • Producing and applying complex stencils

  • Installing coving and decorative mouldings

  • Applying coatings to produce textured finishes

  • Producing broken colour effects
