The Level 2 SVQ/NVQ Diploma in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting Occupations is a work-based qualification designed for learners with some knowledge and basic skills in construction. This course is particularly suited for individuals with experience in Painting & Decorating, Plastering, and Tiling. During the course, progress and assessments will be conducted with the support of an assessor.
To achieve the qualification, candidates must complete the six Mandatory units, along with the required Mandatory or Optional Units from one of the chosen Pathways. Candidates can also complete any Additional Units, but these will not count towards the qualification.
PATHWAYS AND ASSESSMENT
There are three pathways available for candidates, as listed below:
- Pathway 1: Painter
- Pathway 2: Industrial Painter
- Pathway 3: Heritage Painter
Pathway 1 : Painter. Candidates must complete the 6 Mandatory units to achieve the qualification. While candidates may choose to complete any of the additional units, these will not contribute towards the overall qualification.
Mandatory Units
- Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace
- Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace
- Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplace
- Erecting and dismantling access/working platforms in the workplace .
- Preparing surfaces for painting and/or decorating in the workplace.
- Applying surface coatings by brush and roller in the workplace.
Pathway 2 : Industrial Painter. Candidates must complete the 6 Mandatory units, along with 1 Optional unit.
Mandatory Units
- Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace
- Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace
- Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplace
- Erecting and dismantling access/working platforms in the workplace .Unit
- Preparing surfaces for painting and/or decorating in the workplace.
- Applying surface coatings by brush and roller in the workplace
Optional Units
One unit must be completed
- Operating equipment in support of the paint sprayer in the workplace.
- Applying coatings by the airless spray method in the workplace.
- Preparing surfaces by abrasive blast cleaning in the workplace
Pathway 3 : Heritage Painter. Candidates must complete 7 Mandatory units. Candidates may also complete any of the Additional Units but these will not count towards the qualification.

- Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace
- Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplace
- Erecting and dismantling access/working platforms in the workplace
Additional Units.
Candidates from all pathways may choose to complete any of the Additional Units; however, these will not contribute towards the overall qualification..
- Hang wallcoverings (standard and foundation papers) in the workplace
- Hanging non standard width wallcoverings in the workplace
- Applying coatings by the air spray method in the workplace.
- Producing and applying complex stencils in the workplace.
- Installing coving and decorative mouldings in the workplace
- Applying coatings to produce textured finishes in the workplace
- Producing broken colour effects in the workplace.
